The first-screen answer
As of the October 2026 aggregation, Metacritic lists E-Day as “generally favorable” (based on 54 reviews) and OpenCritic reports 90% of critics recommending it. Aggregates move as reviews arrive, so treat them as a snapshot, not a permanent grade — the linked aggregator pages show the current picture.
What critics praised
- Combat feel: repeatedly called the series’ best-feeling gunplay — cover mechanics, weapons, movement and hit feedback.
- Visuals and atmosphere: Unreal Engine 5 presentation, detailed destroyed-city environments and a darker, horror-leaning tone.
- Marcus and Dom: the central brotherhood and performances landed for most reviewers.
- Horde Siege: the expanded co-op mode was a recurring highlight.
What critics criticized
- Pacing in semi-open districts: the larger exploration zones divided opinion, with some finding them repetitive next to the linear sequences.
- Campaign length and repetition: one review clocked a “slog”-leaning critical path beyond 20 hours; another finished around 13 hours on normal while enjoying it.
- Boss battles and omitted mechanics: recurring but secondary complaints.

First week on the market
How is it selling? Microsoft has not published sales figures. What exists is a first-week estimate by analysts at Alinea Analytics, reported by IGN and GameSpot on October 9: roughly 230,000 copies sold across PC and Xbox (about 168,000 on Steam and 62,000 on Xbox), while an estimated 1.7 million players came in through Game Pass — of whom about 722,000 paid the $30 Premium upgrade for early access. Total first-window revenue was estimated around $37 million, with roughly three quarters of it earned inside the Xbox ecosystem.
The analysts’ reading: Game Pass “cannibalised” premium sales on Xbox — nearly twelve upgrade purchases for every Xbox copy sold — while the subscription still delivered the game’s biggest audience by far. Counting upgrades, close to a million people paid something for E-Day in its first week.
These are unofficial estimates, not Microsoft-confirmed numbers, and they describe the October 1–8 window only. Aggregates also drifted after launch weekend: one outlet reported averages of 88 (OpenCritic) and 87 (Metacritic) alongside the “90% recommend” figure above — related but different metrics. Follow the linked sources for current numbers.
What this means for you
New to Gears: reviewers described E-Day as a working entry point — the story stands alone and the systems are introduced by the campaign.
Long-time fans: the consensus favors the return to the darker tone and classic structure; the sharpest disagreements are about the open-zone pacing, so your tolerance for exploratory sections is the best predictor of your reaction.
